Summary

In a wonderful collaboration with the Manitowish Waters Historical Society, these programs uncover layers of the Northwoods' captivating history.

Description

Explore with Manitowish Waters Historical Society guide Jim Bokern and a NLDC naturalist one of the most robust CCC camps in the Northwoods, while walking on the newest Northern Highland American Legion State Forest hiking trail! 23 interpretive signs, cleared archaeological features and years of research will be discussed while traveling along the Manitowish River. Discover a variety of Northwoods ecologies and the impact of the CCC on protecting natural resources. Importantly, two earlier river drive era logging camps are also present on the Camp Mercer campus. This will be a moderately challenging 2-3 mile hike due to uneven terrain. Following the hike there is an option to join the team at Liberty Way Taphouse to continue the historic conversation with historic, specially brewed beer to celebrate Camp Mercer.

Restrooms available at the meeting location.  Registered participants will receive an email with more information prior to the hike.  Registration is required by 8/4/2026 .  $25/Member of NLDC or MWHS and $30/Non-Member.  Thursday 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM.
