Description
Join Naturalists John Bates and Mary Burns on this new fun adventure! We will be spending the day over in Forest County paddling the Wabikon Lake State Natural Area. The 1,105-acre Wabikon Lake State Natural Area runs along the western shore of Wabikon Lake and the northwestern shore of Riley Lake. Connected by a shallow stream, undeveloped Riley Lake is 220 acres, while far larger Wabikon is 513 acres with only a few private parcels on its north shore. Both lakes are very shallow, typically loaded with wild rice, rarely paddled, and are known for their exceptional birdlife. This will be a 4-5 mile paddle. Paddlers should be well experienced and have strong paddling skills in the event of wind. Poor weather backup date for this trip will be Saturday, July 19.
The Discovery Center will provide canoes, PFDs and transportation from the Center to the landing (about a 1.5 hour drive to get there). Participants may plan to bring a lunch/water. More information will be sent to registered participants prior to the trip. Registration is required by 7/16/2025. Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (this includes driving to and from the landing). This trip is partially supported by the Olson Family Foundation. $70/Non-Member and $55/Member.
