Description

Through the inspiration and guidance of Gaylord Nelson during his tenure as governor of Wisconsin from 1959-1963 and US senator from our state from 1963-1981, The Wisconsin Youth Conservation Corps was created and shaped to help carry out work through the Wisconsin Conservation Department (DNR).  As a result of his efforts, the Outdoor Recreation Act became law in 1961. This act allocated 50 million dollars for the State of Wisconsin to acquire over one million acres of land for recreation and preservation and created the Wisconsin Youth Conservation Corps (WYCC). The first WYCC Camp was Statehouse Lake in Manitowish Waters. Today this property is the site of the North Lakeland Discovery Center. Join Kay Krans and a staff member on a walking tour of Discovery Center property to learn how this place was built with the labor of the young people of the WYCC. We will then head out for a tour with short, low-to- moderate hikes, visiting local sites that were created by the hard work of YCC campers. We will tour a site on the Manitowish River, Firefly Campground, part of the Escanaba Trail, and Crystal Lake.  Registration required by 10/16.  $35 ($30 members of the DC or MWHS)
