Description

Join local geologist Mike Porter as we explore the Winegar Moraine.  The glacial deposits of the last ice advance in northern Vilas County are varied in terms of their composition, texture and influence on the landscape of the region. Glacial geologists use these features to infer the physical processes and environments of this last ice advance and retreat.  Two stops will illustrate this recent glacial history; one located at the ice margin and another developed on top of the ice sheet. The trip will highlight the influence of the glacial geology on the landscape and its impact on the forest ecology of the region. A few stops with short hikes with some terrain puts this at a moderatly strenuous level.

Registration required by 9/13. Registered participants will meet at the Discovery Center and ride together in the van, information about the trip will be sent ahead of time. $45 ($40 members)
