Description
It’s hard to find a lovelier wild lake in Wisconsin than Tucker – it’s listed as one of the Top Ten Wild Lakes in John Bates’ book Wisconsin’s Wild Lakes. Tucker is designated as an outstanding/exceptional water resource under Chapter NR 102 of the Wisconsin Statutes and lies within the 674-acre Tucker Lake Hemlocks State Natural Area and 158-acre Federal Research Natural Area. Old-growth hemlock-hardwoods are present along the southwest shore. Remnant old-growth forest communities are quite rare in northern Wisconsin, and this stand contains approximately 68 acres of old-growth hemlocks, yellow birch, and sugar maples. Breeding birds include blackburnian warbler, black-throated green warbler, brown creeper, northern parula, osprey, trumpeter swans, and bald eagle. Join John and Mary for this fabulous trip to a place not many people have visited! We will paddle about one mile northeast across Round Lake to a ¼-mile portage trail to Tucker Lake. Participants must be able to portage their own canoe or kayak to and from Tucker Lake on a well-maintained path. Wheels may be used. Participants should also be experienced paddlers given the open crossing from Round Lake to Tucker Lake. Registration required by 8/17. Participants will meet on location with their own equipment and will be contacted ahead of time with directions and a list of what to bring. $65 ($55 members)
