Exploratory Hike of Doering Woods & Memorial Grove State Natural Areas with John Bates & Mary Burns

The 284-acre Doering Woods SNA occurs within the 3,600-acre Round Lake Semi-Primitive Non-Motorized Area, which contains the origin and upper reaches of the South Fork of the Flambeau River. The site has a history of selective cutting, but still contains a surprising number of large super-canopy white pines, a number of which measure between 36 and 38 inches dbh – the largest being 41 inches dbh. Usually the large white pines are the first to go when logging takes place, so these are quite unusual. 

The 68-acre stand of virgin timber in Memorial Grove was established on Memorial Day, 1947, along with a shelter and a plaque dedicated to four Forest Service men killed in battle in World War II. It was then, and still is, a fitting idea – a legacy forest conserved as a legacy to forest service employees lost during military service. The age of the oldest-known trees in the stand is now around 330 years.

Join Naturalists John Bates, Mary Burns and NLDC Naturalist Licia as we explore these unique areas.  We will eat lunch near the restored Round Lake Logging Dam which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located where the South Fork of the Flambeau River leaves Round Lake.  These are relatively short hikes – less than 1 mile each – on reasonably level ground.
