Description

The Turtle Chain of Lakes tour series will explore the unique environment and history of these legendary waters. This will be presented in multiple canoe trips through July, including an exploration of Turtle Creek from Winchester to Cedar Lake and journeys in Rock, North and South Turtle Lakes.  Kickstarting this series will be a trip from Winchester Town Park down Turtle Creek to Cedar Lake. Turtle Creek feeds water from headwater lakes, Birch, Tamarack, Deer, Rainbow, No Mans, Rock, North and South Turtle into Cedar Lake and onwards to the Turtle Flambeau Flowage. This waterway is home to a variety of wildlife, especially waterfowl and beaver. Historically it has been a valuable place for hunting and fishing for native people as well as early pioneers and trappers. Outdoor guide Blaze Burton will guide the tour along this route used by the pioneering Buck family as late as the 1890s as a naturalist from the North Lakeland Discovery Center interprets the flora and fauna along the way. Guests can expect to encounter beaver dams that require the guest to exit the canoe in wet and muddy terrain and re-enter it to navigate. The Total distance will be around 5 miles, duration may be affected by natural water levels.
