Description

One of the most amazing light shows on earth is produced by microscopic plankton found throughout the warm waters of the Caribbean. Bioluminescent ostracods were first scientifically described in the mid 80's and Dr. Gretchen Gerrish has focused on understanding their life cycles, reproduction, diversity, and interactions with the coral reef environment for over 20 years. Studying a tiny crustacean that can only be found underwater in pure darkness provides many unique challenges. She will discuss how collaboration with film makers, in addition to expanding the reach of her research, has expanded her visual understanding in the system and has provided opportunities for new discovery.
