Description
Through a new citizen science program volunteers will be constructing, installing, and monitoring up to 10 new artificial loon nesting platforms on the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes during spring 2015. The goal of this project is to increase productivity among nesting loon pairs on the chain by providing additional nesting substrate through artifiical loon nesting platforms. Sign up to help us out!
We will need people to help with monitoring platforms on Rest, Stone, Clear, Island, Little Star, and Alder Lakes. Platforms should be visited weekly during May and June to record the presence of adult loons, nesting behavior, eggs, and chicks. You can volunteer to be the primary surveyor for one platform during the entire nesting season, or offer to be an alternate surveyor to help with weeks when the primary surveyor knows they will be unable to get out to their platform. If you would like to help monitor an artificial nesting platform this summer please plan to attend a training on March 28 from 9:30-11:30 am. If you are unable to attend the training but would like to help with monitoring please send an e-mail to Heather Lumpkin at heather@discoverycenter.net. Indicate your interest in helping to monitor loon nesting platforms by signing up here.
