Description
In this land of deep forest, numerous rivers, streams and lakes; where the waterways were the main arteries of travel, the birch bark canoe of the Ojibwe was the most important means of travel and transportation.
The experienced canoe-builder goes about his task with sure deftness. His final success is assured because of his "feel" of his materials; he knows the natural stress and shrinkages of green materials; he understands the allowances he must take to fashion a craft with the graceful, sweeping, curving lines that create the traditional symmetry of the bark canoe. We shall explore the secrets of the craftsman that can only be learned with patience.
