8th Annual Birding Festival

A wonderful weekend of discovery, learning and fun!

Saturday Keynote Speaker: Bill Volkert

Bill Volkert worked as the naturalist and wildlife educator for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at Horicon Marsh for 27 years, where he conducted more than 3,600 education programs for over 220,000 people. Bill and his wife Connie make their home in the northern Kettle Moraine area of east-central Wisconsin. Here they work together to restore a series of native plant communities on their land, including an oak-hickory forest, a planted prairie community and nursery, and manage various types of wetlands. From this land, they have now identified nearly 600 species of plants and animals, including 202 species of birds.

His Keynote: "The History of Horicon Marsh" provides an overview of the fascinating shorebirds, geology, history, wildlife and ecological concerns for maintaining the health and integrity of this vast wetland.

Friday's Reception Speaker, hosted by the Bird Club, Mariette Nowak

Mariette Nowak is an engaging speaker and passionate about the topic of landscaping for birds. Author of the popular book, "Birdscaping in the Midwest" she helps Midwestern gardeners learn how to create outstanding bird habitats with native plants that offer food, cover, and nesting sites for birds. In addition, she offers specific advice on nest boxes, bird baths, misters, perches and other garden features to attract birds and guidance for maintaining your naturally landscaped bird gardens.
