Friday Night Reception: "Habitats North: Artists at Home with Birds" On Friday evening, May 14, from 5:30-7:30pm, the Bird Club is excited to announce that six Northwoods artists, who also happen to be birdwatchers, will share and showcase an exhibition about our northern environment. These six artists view the rich diversity of birds and habitat as one of the compelling reasons for living, enjoying, studying and creating in the North. The exhibition, "Habitats North: Artists at Home with Birds," brings to life five Northwoods habitats and the birds that live in them. Works depict wetlands, shorelines, boreal, dry and wet forest habitats. Poems by naturalist John Bates illuminate each habitat. Weavings by Mary Burns, pastel paintings by Terry Daulton, batik (silk) paintings by Connie Kerkove, photography by Jeff Richter, and ceramic sculpture by Joan Molloy Slack reflect the artists' love of the home they share with the birds.
The Bird Fest 2010 Keynote Speaker is……..Stan Tekiela! This is a fun and entertaining talk presenting fascinating facts and tidbits about some of the birds that people love to hate. Stan will challenge your preconceived ideas about some common birds such as the European Starling, the American Crow and much, much more. You will never look at these birds the same way ever again. This talk wraps up with a strong environmental message of conservation and understanding.
Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and as an active professional naturalist for more than 20 years, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and has received various national and regional awards for his books and photographs.
