Summary
Description
Etegami is a Japanese art form that combines simple hand-painted imagery with words. Translated as "picture letter," Etegami values expression over perfection. In this workshop, we will explore this art form as a practice of slowing down and truly seeing. Emphasis will be placed on embracing irregular lines, uneven brushstrokes, and intuitive mark making. (Created by the lift of the elbow and the way the brush is loosely dangled perpendicular to the papers surface.) Etegami are meant to look "clumsy", which is part of their charm!
Using ink and watercolor, participants will create small works (4" x 6") that depict everyday subjects- plants, fruits and vegetables, found forms, or personal objects- paired with brief personal text. Etegami is traditionally shared as a gift or mailed as a personal message, making each piece both an artwork and an act of connection.
No experience is necessary for this workshop. All supplies will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring along snacks or a lunch. Space is limited and registration is required by 5/31/26. We will meet in the Forest Room on campus in our Nature Hall at the Discovery Center. Tuesday 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM. $36/Non-Member and $30/Member.
